Winter hummingbirds in black and white. I took these photos of my little friends during a cold snap that we had at the end of last year. Black and white suits the chilly winter setting and brings out some of the details in their feathers.
This winter I’ve been enjoying watching the hummingbirds. They are a little less colorful than they are in the summer, perhaps to blend into the background.
For Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Birds.
I used the GIMP, with an older version of the Nik plug-in, to convert the images to black and white. The first was done using the GIMP’s built-in filters, using two different filters then layering the effects. For the last two I used a Nik Silver Effects Pro preset: high key fine art with a frame.
If you are interested in playing with the GIMP’s monochrome abilities check out my post: Black and white digital photo processing using the GIMP.
These are stunning photos of these hummers. We have a few that stick around here as well. 😀
I’m rather fond of that Silver Efex high key fine art preset – I thought I recognised it in your shots! Very effective for these little birds 🙂
Thanks. It really brings out the detail in the feathers without blowing everything else out.
Congratulations! I’ve featured your post in CBWC this week.
I hope you have a great weekend.

You are welcome Kate 😀
oh wow they work so well in B&W, and congratulations on being one of Cee’s featured posts
Thank you.
Your photos of these little birds are so precious! And the cozy is really cute, I’m sure the feeder appreciates it!
