For Mid-week monochrome I decided to see what I could do with some photos from a recent trip on the Tournon Steam Train. Black and white suits classic subjects. And the Tournon steam train, also called the Vivarais Railway, is very classic. This steam train and its engine are listed historic monuments. If you’d like to learn more about the train and railway, read this article: Chemin de fer du Vivarais.
Tournon is on the Rhone River in the Ardeche region of France. In addition to the steam train, the old city itself is well worth exploring.
I used the GIMP to process these photos. Before I converted them, I used an Orton effect with a mask to selectively soften the landscape, and bring out the clouds in the sky. Here are a couple of posts about using the GIMP: Creating the Orton Effect in the GIMP and Black and White Digital photo processing using the GIMP.
These photos taken with my Sony RX10iv camera, and processed using Raw Therapee and the GIMP. The original color images included in this post: Tracks and Bridges: the Tournon Steam Train.
