Join the One-to-Three Photo Processing Challenge to have some creative fun with photos.
The purpose of the One-to-Three Photo Processing Challenge is to play. These days we have so many different ways to process a photo: from phone apps to Photoshop. And these different software options make it accessible for anyone to get fun and beautiful effects. Whether you have a lot of time or a little.
I’ve been spending a lot of my pandemic playing with photo processing. Because it is a relaxing indoor activity that I can do for free (I mostly use open-source programs and old versions of paid programs). And I thought it might be fun to share what I’ve been doing and see what other folks are trying out.
No complicated rules, just:
- Pick a photo you want to play with.
- Process it using three different methods.
- After that create a blog post with the original and your creative products.
- If you can, please include a description of your methods. So others can give them a whirl.
- Then add a comment below containing the link to you post (pingbacks don’t seem to work, I’m trying to figure out why). So we can all see your creations.
- Check out what other folks are doing for new ideas.
I can hardly wait to see what you create.
August creations:
Here’s my one-to-three contribution for this month:
Directions for my methods:
- Simple desaturation: Colors>Desaturate>Desaturate using the value (HSV) method.
- I used two layers for this: the bottom layer was the original with a G’mic Brushify filter (in the Artistic set) using the gaussian brush type. The top layer was the black & white in #1 with the blend mode set to soft light.
- For this one I used ttwo layers again. The first was the original with the simple linear iterative filter: Filters>Artistic>Simple linear iterative. I adjusted the parameters to get a more abstract look. Again I overlaid the black & white with the soft light blend mode.
I use the GIMP, an open-source (free) program comparable to Adobe’s Photoshop. If you are interested in trying the GIMP, check out my post: Get going with the GIMP.
I’ve also been experimenting with the G’mic plug-in for the GIMP*. It works with other programs as well. G’mic is a free program with over 500 filters from extremely functional to fun. All of my creations used filters in the Artistic group of filters.

*Here is a YouTube video explaining how you can load G’mic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6USHVj9pyhI.
I like the last one. I really like the painterly look these days and this one has it.
Thanks. I’m not sure what “iterative clustering” is, but this filter does give a painted sort of effect.
I decided to give this ago…..wow so much fun!!! I think I might be addicted to this challenge now 🙂https://cathscamera.wordpress.com/2021/09/04/1-2-3-photo-challenge-september-2021/
